Shekau resurfaces in new video; says I’m in a happy state, good health

The embattled leader of jihadist group Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, resurfaced in a video posted online Sunday, rejecting assertions by the Nigerian army that he had been seriously wounded.

“You have been spreading in the social media that you injured or killed me,” Shekau said in the 40-minute video released on YouTube and dated September 25.

“Oh tyrants, I’m in a happy state, in good health and in safety.”

The Nigerian army said on August 23 that Shekau had been seriously wounded in the shoulder in an air raid in which several commanders were killed.

The army’s claim was bolstered when Boko Haram released a video on September 13 without Shekau in it.

That video, also posted on YouTube, shows an unidentified man who says he is representing Shekau, who had allegedly been ousted by the Islamic State group to which Boko Haram pledged allegiance in March 2015.

Nigerian soldiers, with the support of regional troops, have recaptured swathes of territory lost to the jihadists since they launched a military campaign in February 2014.

The mass kidnapping of schoolgirls from the remote town of Chibok provoked global outrage and brought unprecedented attention to Boko Haram and its bloody quest to create a fundamentalist state in northeastern Nigeria.

You Must Embrace Local Contents In Executing Your Projects, Ekiti Lawmaker Advises MDG Contractors

A member of Ekiti State House Of Assembly, representing Ilejemeje Constituency, Hon.( Mrs) Cecelia Dada has enjoined the contractors that won bids to handle the Millennium Development Goals Projects in Ilejemeje Local Government and other areas in the state to embrace local contents in the execution, implementation of their projects.

She gave the advice while the Millennium Development Goals Implementation Committee led by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Barrister Dipo Anisulowo paid an unscheduled visit to Iye-Ekiti General Hospital, the Headquarter of Ilehejemeje Local Government yesterday.

According to her,  doing this would go a long way in boosting, creating job opportunities and improve the socio- economic status of the communities in Ilejemeje Local Government and the state in general.

"We agree that you ( the contractors) have won the contracts but our sons and daughters must be actively involved in the execution of the projects because they are the major beneficiaries" She said.

She stressed that in the construction company, there were issues of increased cost of importation of facilities, equipment and materials which in turn had ripple effect on consumers, but gave the assurance that if opportunity were given to local content production and patronage, the work would be easier, faster and changing the socio economic conditions of the benefited communities.

She therefore commended the contractor handling all Millennium Development Goals Projects across the three senatorial districts of the state, particularly at Iye-Ekiti General Hospital for the quality of job done, adding that they would indeed create better living conditions for residents of Iye-Ekiti and Ilejemeje Local Government Area.

Defection: PDP tells INEC to declare Dariye’s seat vacant

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare the seat of Sen. Joshua Dariye in the Senate vacant.

Dariye, on Thursday at the Senate, announced his defection from PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing lingering leadership crisis in the party as reason.

In a statement by the party’s Deputy Chairman in the state, Mr Amos Gombi, on Friday in Jos, PDP urged INEC to immediately conduct fresh election for Dariye’s Plateau Central Senatorial seat.

It said that the fresh election would be in accordance with section 68, sub-section one of the 1999 Constitution as amended since Dariye had abandoned the party on whose platform he contested and won the election.

”In 2015, Sen. Dariye contested and was elected on the platform of the PDP as senator, representing Plateau Central Senatorial Zone.

”But, by leaving the party, he cannot under this circumstance, lawfully and legally retain his seat as representative of the people in accordance with section 68 sub-section 1 of the 199 Constitution as amended.

”We strongly condemn this act and demand that he should honourably resign and vacate his seat as senator representing Plateau Central, haven become a member of another party before the expiration his tenure.

”So, we categorically call on INEC to immediately declare his seat vacant and conduct fresh election to replace him,” the statement demanded.

The party denied any division or crisis in its ranks and called on its supporters to disregard such insinuations.

It urged the supporters and members to remain steadfast in their loyalty, saying that Dariye’s exit would do no harm to its popularity.

EFCC operative arrested for collecting N15 m bribe

For demanding and collecting a bribe of N15 million from a Nigerian lawmaker under investigation for undisclosed financial crime, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested and detained one of its operatives, whose name was given as Uzodinma Kingsley Agbazue.

Agbazue, a Deputy Detective Superintendent, DDS, was disarmed and detained on Thursday following a complaint lodged by the Nigerian lawmaker that he collected the cash with a promised to kill the case involving him or at least, give him a ‘”soft landing” in his matter with the anti-graft agency by compromising the investigation.

According to the complainant, Agbazue had approached him, claiming he had been mandated by the officer handling the case to discuss and reach an agreement on how to “kill the case”.

“Following the approach, a sum of N15 million was given to Agbazue whose game plan collapsed after the Investigating officer, who was ignorant of his scheme, refused to do his bidding.

“With the investigation gathering momentum after parting with the hefty sum, the complainant became uncomfortable and demanded a refund.

“The complainant stated that, when he requested for the refund of his money, Agbazue only returned N5million claiming that the balance of N10 million had been given to someone “to kill the case from the top”.

“The complainant also alleged that the operative had earlier collected N1 million at a different time as assistance for settlement of his wife’s medical bill.

A statement by the EFCC Spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said Agbazue’s action was in contravention of the commission’s mandate and ideals as the EFCC will not solicit or accept gratification from a suspect to compromise a case under investigation.

“The suspect will be subjected to administrative action as precursor to possible prosecution at the end of the investigation,”the spokesman said.

How IBB, Jonathan, Gusau Facilitate Sheriff, Makarfi Reconciliation

Former President Goodluck Jonathan. Ex-military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and former National Security Adviser, NSA who also served as Jonathan’s Minister of Defence, General Aliyu Gusau were the principal leaders who facilitated the reconciliation moves to unite the Ali Modu Sherif and Ahmed Makarfi factions of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Based on the promptings of the ex-leaders, Sheriff reached out to Makarfi, one of aides to the hitherto embattled leaders said.

A meeting was held between the two factional leaders Tuesday in Abuja and they resolved to constitute a committee of all stakeholders to ensure a broader reconciliation within the party, News diary online was told.

It was after their meeting that Senator Ben Obi announced that the Sheriff and Makarfi factions have agreed to issue a joint statement.

Obi who was flanked by Dr. Cairo Ojuigho of the Sheriff faction said “We have decided to issue a joint statement. As we speak today, the PDP is back as one family.

He said further that “The two leaders will address you gentlemen of the press, will constitute a joint committee with the support of all relevant organs of the party.”

Newsdiaryonline learnt that IBB, Jonathan and Gusau among others who facilitated the reconciliation effort have a bigger picture in mind.

The main goal is to unite the party and bring all the aggrieved PDP members including serving governors and ex-governors as well as lawmakers who left the party because of past grievances.

It was further learnt one of the former leaders who facilitated the reconciliation moves told his colleagues that the best option to ensure the realization of the bigger picture was to encourage Makarfi and Sheriff to unite.

He reasoned that though the law may appear to favour Sheriff in his claim to PDP national chairmanship, majority of the PDP stakeholders were behind Makarfi so the best way forward was to get them to work together in the interest of the party.

When Makarfi and Sheriff met Tuesday, they resolved to purge themselves of any personal interest and work for true reconciliation and the return of all the aggrieved PDP members including those who had earlier quitted the party.

An insider insisted Tuesday that these meetings help a great deal in smoothening the road to reconciliation within Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
